Origin Music And Sound
We plan on having an original soundtrack due to the need for it to be so specific to the film. The reason we need it to be so specific is that our soundtrack effectively is the replacement for dialogue. The music will be what conveys the atmosphere and emotion however we do not want it to over power the shots either. We have decided that a simple piano melody would be the most fitting for this as it easily conveys emotion however it will not take away from the shots.
Tracks To Take inspiration From
Together we will live forever- Clint Mansell
Preludes: La colombe (The Dove)- Oliver Messiaen, Hakin Austbo
In the opening shots we plan on having music to create a mysterious tone however as the intensity and drama of the shots increase we will add more dissonance and it will become increasingly atonal.
To record the soundtrack we will use garage band.
Due to time limitations and possible future complications that could be faced in recording we have decided to use a royalty free soundtrack. I have realised that the importance of the sound track is huge and I want it to sound as professional as possible. I am now putting in time to researching and locating the perfect soundtrack. We want subtle soundtrack as the focus is on the characters movement however we want dramatic changes in the music when are character emerges from the water and when she discovers the remains of her house.
We seriously considered a sound track like this from the beginning of the movie however we then decided it did not create the correct atmosphere and perhaps sounded to much like something that would be found in a scifi film.
We also considered this more subtle soundtrack to have in our opening but then decided we wanted a more melodic track to stimulate a more mysterious atmosphere in the water shots.
We decided that this soundtrack was perfect for our opening shots to create the mysterious and peaceful aura that matched the calming water shots. It consists of a gentle drone, and a simple melody played on glockenspiel. As part of research I listened to the full soundtrack of "Hanna" and noticed that our chosen track is very similar to Hannas theme from the movie with regard to instrumentation and melody.
However we realised that this tone was not present throughout our film and we needed the music to change with the atmosphere. This resulted in our decision to combine two soundtracks, one that we had preciously considered "brink" and "waterways". To create a bridge between the two soundtracks and the changing atmosphere we made the choice to have a dramatic sound effect as Meabh emerges from the water.
Non-diegetic sound was an extremely important part of Meabh's reaction to the ruined cottage, it is a way of letting our audience know what is going on in the characters head. To create suspense and panic I gathered a number of sound effects that would have been present in her community such as a
-fire burning,
-laughter,
-voices,
-sounds of animals
-A crowd shouting
These were layered during the shots of Meabh's reaction in the forest. I adjusted volume and start times on these sounds to create a more natural ambience. The volume was also adjusted in some tracks to emphasise panic such as the baby crying. The dramatic cut to silence and the cottage shows the sharp contrast to what Meabh expected to see and what is really there. In the opening of the witch off screen sound is used to create a sense of mystery around the male speaker, seeing this made us realise how powerful off screen sound can be.
To emphasise this point of view shot, I made use of diegetic sound. I took audio of Meabh breathing heavily and placed it on the shot of her walking towards the cottage.
Sound was essential in these shots to create the panic and confusion that one would experience at finding there home in ruin.
Other sound effects were added for example to accompany Meabh emerging from the water. A high impact drone was used to change the atmosphere from mysterious to thrilling. It was at this point that I introduced the second soundtrack "brink" to match the atmosphere.
